Pattern
How shoulder pain shows up
Some shoulder pain feels sharp with reaching away from the body. Other cases feel like a deep ache that builds during the day and flares at night when you roll onto that side.
Symptom clusters
These are common patterns people report. Your exam clarifies which ones matter and what they mean.
- Pain when reaching overhead or into a high cabinet
- Discomfort when putting on a jacket or reaching behind the back
- Pain when fastening a seatbelt or reaching across the body
- Pain with lifting a child, groceries, or a bag away from the body
- A painful arc when raising the arm to shoulder height
- Weakness or shakiness with pressing, pushing, or carrying
- Night pain when lying on the affected side
- Waking up with stiffness that improves after moving
- Clicking, catching, or popping that feels painful or limiting
- Pain in the front of the shoulder with lifting or reaching
Exam
What we test in the first visit
We measure shoulder motion in all directions and compare sides. We test rotator cuff strength, shoulder blade control, and how the joint behaves during reaching and lifting.
We also identify the specific positions that reproduce symptoms and screen nearby contributors when needed, including the neck, upper back, and nerve related signs.
What we measure
History + mechanism
What happened, what changed, and what makes symptoms better or worse.
Range + tolerance
Where motion is limited and what movements reproduce symptoms.
Strength + stability
Key muscle groups and joint control relevant to your presentation.
Neurologic screen
If indicated: sensation, reflexes, and symptom behavior patterns.
If red flags exist, we escalate to appropriate medical evaluation.
Plan
Return to reaching and lifting
Rehab starts by settling the irritated pattern and restoring comfortable motion. Then we build strength and control in the angles that matter for your work, sleep, and daily tasks.
